           About Me

 

Through my personal journey with food, weight and then diabetes, I developed a passion for helping others navigate the world of healing their bodies and their souls through diet and lifestyle... including delicious whole food nutrition, exercise and stress reduction as well as mentoring, love, empathy and compassion!  

I have a BS degree from Cornell University in Plant Science. After college I worked for Cornell Cooperative Extension teaching vegetable farmers techniques for growing crops using fewer pesticides. A developing interest in the economics of food and agriculture led me back to school where I obtained a MS degree from Rutgers University in Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics. Afterwards I worked as an Agribusiness and Ag Biotech Consultant for a large consulting firm.

My career continued as I raised two boys, Alexander, who is now in graduate school at UW in Seattle, and Spencer, who lives in Brooklyn, NYC and works for a computer science consulting firm. Both are graduates of Princeton University. I am proud  to say that both boys are now very much into healthy cooking and eating. It did take quite a bit of persistence on my part to be a role model for healthy food choices but I must say that the payoff is huge. I have given them a foundation in health that will carry them throughout their lives.

Returning to Rutgers, this time as an employee, I worked on Agricultural, Food and Land Use Policy issues, bringing the University together with Industry, State Government, the Public and other interested stakeholders to find common ground and win-win solutions to many issues facing New Jersey. My efforts were instrumental in the formation of the Food Policy Institute at Rutgers University.

But then, at the age of 39, my life took a twist. I was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes, also know as Juvenile Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes. This was quite a shock to say the least. I had always struggled with my weight and body image, never being satisfied with what I weighed, and constantly dealing with emotional and unconscious eating. But now I had to learn how to eat, exercise and live with a body that no longer produced any insulin. It was a huge learning curve, and that was 18 years ago. First, I started with 4 to 5 insulin shots a day. Then after two years I switched to an insulin pump, which I still use today.

Over these years, I have learned how to manage my weight, which is highly sensitive to excess insulin, as well as my blood sugars and keep them stable to the best of my ability. It is still a juggling act as there is no such thing as perfect control. Every bite of food I take, every step of exercise and every stress inducing situation all impact my diabetes control, my weight and my health. 

Several years ago I developed another autoimmune condition, Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's disease. Again my body failed to work as it had been intended.

One of the most important things I have learned is that my diet is an area that has great influence on my weight, my diabetes and my overall health. I have explored many theories of eating, attended many weight loss programs, read many diet, fitness and diabetes books, taken classes, hired nutrition and exercise coaches, embraced yoga, learned meditation and self hypnosis, and have never stop seeking avenues to help me heal both my body and my soul.

Eight years ago I discovered an incredible cooking support group for health and healing called, The Suppers Programs. At these weekly, hands on cooking, eating and sharing support group meetings, I have learned how to cook delicious and nutritious meals primarily from whole foods. After a year, I helped establish meetings for people struggling with weight and blood sugar issues including Pre-Diabetes, Type-2 Diabetes (or Adult Onset Diabetes) and Type-1 Diabetes. We call our meetings, Suppers for Stable Blood Sugar and Suppers for Diabetes Success. For more information about "Suppers" check out the website at www.TheSuppersPrograms.org. I have also co-started another local support group specifically for women with diabetes... it is a Princeton branch of the national organization DiabetesSisters. We meet monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the West Windsor Library in Princeton Junction. It is a wonderful community of women sharing their challenges as well as their sucesses with living with thier diabetes. As peers, we have so much we can all learn from eachother. Plus, it is so wonderful to be connected to women all over the country through the national website, www.DiabetesSisters.org, leadership trainings and conferences.

I have also been a Weight-Loss and Well-Being Coaching for MyOwnCare, a tele-health, behavior-change start-up company. Through this program, I have been able to deepen my coaching with incredible techniques to step back, observe ourselves, understand our behavior, and actually develop strategies to grow into the person we would like to be!

In 2012 I was certified with the Transformational Coaching Method program of HolisticMBA, learning new ways to support my clients with deeper coaching stratgegies.

I am also Certified as a Peer Leader to teach the Stanford University Diabetes Self-Management Program and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, 6-week group programs that empower people to develop the skills and support needed for the day to day management of their chronic conditions.

Yoga also plays a large role in my life. In the Spring of 2010, I became a Certified Yoga Teacher with a 200 hour Teacher Training Program in Yoga and Wellness. In 2014, I completed a 180 hour training in Therapeutic Yoga to enhance my knowledge of best ways and practices to assist those of us living with physical and medical restrictions. For me, yoga is not only a means of strengthening, stretching, twisting and massaging my physical body, but it also serves as an avenue for stress relieve, calming, healing and nurturing my mind and spirit through the use of my breath, inner focus and deep relaxation and meditation. Our bodies are the temples of our souls, and yoga helps me accept my body as it is so I can nurture my soul! I am excited to bring the often simple teachings and practice of yoga to my health coaching practice.

Now it is time for me to use my life experience and nutritional training to share what I have learned with YOU.
